Whether you are preparing to sell or just need a pick-me-up for your most used room in the house, these 10 tips will help upgrade your kitchen minus the splurging!
Let’s start with whats essentially free.
1.) Scrub It Down!
Give your kitchen a thorough scrub down from top to bottom. Wash the cabinets, counter tops, floors, drawers, you name it. Get it spotless so we know what were working with!
2.) Organization + Decluttering is Key
To get a polished, finished look we will need to reorganize everything. Empty out those drawers and scrap everything that isn’t needed or must be replaced. On the counter tops, get rid of any eye-sores and clutter, the less out in the open the better. For your drawers and cabinets, keep the essentials and make everything easier to access depending how often they are necessary.
3.) Upgrade Your Accessories
Any old kitchen utensils and accessories you may have been hanging onto, it’s time to throw them out. This includes dish towels, spoon holders near the stove, cutting boards, anything you think could make a difference to buy new. Invest in good quality accessories such as hardwood cutting boards, they even provide a great accent to the kitchen if left out against the back splash. Keep your colors and utensils alike. This will help keep things more uniform.
4.) Replace Hardware
If you have kitchen handles and hardware holding on with their last bit of strength, think about replacing them. You don’t have to replace all of them if you can find the same design!
5.) Fix Fixtures
Replacing your old lighting fixtures with a new simple design will accentuate the cleanliness of your kitchen. The less clunky, the better!
6.) Repaint and Stain
If you have outdated cabinets and worn paint, it’s time to revamp! Get a fresh gallon of paint on the walls, whatever color you desire whether that be a rich beige or a crisp white. For the cabinets, if they are wood you have the option of re staining them as well. This will give you kitchen a brand new look.
7.) Create a Display Shelf
While were working on those cabinets, a new DIY project that is popular is actually removing the doors! You can create a display shelf out of your old cabinets, how easy does that sound? All you need to do is decorate the inside with some stick on wallpaper or paint! Another funky idea is to contrast the color of the walls with your display cabinets. Don’t be afraid to personalize.
8.) Illuminate Work Areas
A second new, easy and extremely popular tip is to get track lighting underneath your cabinets. It is super easy to do yourself and it looks great, not to mention is more useful when you’re at your work station preparing food!
9.) Fix Up your Windows
If you have chipping paint around your window, add that to your painting to do list! Once your windows are in good shape, you may be interested in getting some new window fixtures. Some light, easy to pull shades will do the trick. We want to avoid anything chunky that could get splashed and ruined. A useful window fixture to take a look at are some roman shades. They are easy to pull up and they come in any pattern or color you desire!
10.) Counter Tops
Now this last tip is only for the counter tops that are in dire need of some TLC. If after cleaning them you can’t get those stubborn stains out, consider getting new laminate counters. They are significantly cheaper and easier to replace. For those who have tile counter tops, if need be you can replace the grout between them which is an easy DIY project.
