Tips To Keep Your Dog Healthy & Cool in the Summer!

  1. Take Your Dog Out either Early or Late
    1. The hottest part of any day is the afternoon! Try to aim for walks in the morning or evening to keep your dog from overheating or hurting their paws on the hot road!
  2. Invest in Dog Booties
    1. Yes, they look crazy and adorable at the same time. But a common suggestion for walking your dog outside is to put your barefoot on the ground and see how long you can last! That’s typically a good indicator if it is too hot to walk or not. And to avoid the issue all together- invest in some dog booties!
  3. Let Them Test the Temperature!
    1. Before you intend to walk your dog, give it an opportunity to stand outside for a bit. They will either retreat to the air conditioning or want to stay out for some air. This will also give you an idea of how your dog is feeling.
  4. Break Out the Kiddie Pool!
    1. For your dogs, that is. Many people invest in kiddie pools for their pooches over the summer- especially bigger dogs that need to cool down fast. It is an efficient tool to use for an overheating dog!
  5. Keep Your Dog Hydrated
    1. Make sure your dog always has fresh, cool water. It is essential.
  6. Never Leave Your Dog in A Parked Car!
    1. This is extremely important. I remember watching a video of how long a NFL Football Player could last in a hot car and let me tell you- it was less than 10 minutes. If you must leave your dog in the car, keep the AC on and make sure they are hydrated!
  7. Give Your Dog  A Pass for Digging
    1. Dogs will dig to reach the cool dirt to lay in. If you catch him digging in the yard, he may be too hot!
  8. Summer Bug Problems
    1. It is known that bugs peak in the summer. Keep yourself protected, as well as your dog! Talk to your vet about collars for your dogs.
  9. Beware of Lawn Fertilizer!
    1. Fertilizer can be extremely hazardous to dogs. Keep them off of the lawn if necessary.
  10. Doggy Ice Cream
    1. We love ice pops & ice cream in the summer. Treat your loved one to store bought dog ice cream or you can find a DIY ice pop recipe! They will love you for it!
